UNBOXING: Dell Studio 14z Notebook

www.digitalhomethoughts.com This is an unboxing and first impressions video of the Dell Studio 14z. This notebook, shown here in ruby red, is a little different that most notebooks in that it lacks a CD drive – but it’s no netbook! It has a 14 inch, 16:9 aspect ratio screen running at 1600 x 900 resolution, which is Dell’s 900p resolution option (an upgrade). The standard resolution is 720p, which is 1280 x 720. Powering it all is an Intel Core 2 Duo: the P8600, running at 2.4 Ghz, with 3 MB of L2 cache. 3 GB of DDR3 RAM at 1066mhz provides the memory, and storage is handled by a 320 GB, 7200 RPM hard drive. The graphics processor is an NVIDIA GeForce 9400G-M, and the on-board 802.11 b/g/n WiFI is an Intel 1515 card. It also has Bluetooth 2.1, and an optional ExpressCard 8-in-1 memory card adaptor that arrived damaged as you’ll see in the video. The keyboard is back-lit, which is an add-on option, and it’s running Windows Vista 64-bit. Powering it all is a 6-cell, 54 WHr battery. I paid $1306 CAD for this configuration from Dell Canada as of May 2009, but Dell’s prices change daily to always check their Web site for the most accurate pricing information. @gautamelastic Don’t you see the annotation I put right at the start of the video? It’s a Dell Studio 14z. If you’re watching YouTube videos with annotations turned off, you’re missing the things that the video creators are trying to communicate to you.

@ThoughtsMedia I just bought this laptop from the outlet store. Interesting comment about macs because this laptop has the same speces as the mac book air (Intel Core 2 Duo, Nvidia 9400M on motherboard). So I bought mine specifically to make a dual booting Hackintosh and Windows 7 laptop. I used the hackintosh guides out there and bought a leopard install cd (along with a cheap USB cd drive). It works very well on both OSs. the HDMI out is a plus. I watched this video beforehand. Thanks

@14duffytc1 Because Apple only sends review products to a few select people – usually the ones who they know will give them glowing reviews – and I’m not one of those people. I’m not going to go buy a Mac to review it. Plus, I’m a Windows guy through and through – there’s not much I find appealing about Macs.

Why don’t you review any Macs?

  • ThoughtsMedia July 25th, 2010 at 2:29 pm #9

@Nba2kballer No, it doesn’t support HDMI in, only HDMI out.

  • ThoughtsMedia July 25th, 2010 at 4:48 pm #16

If sounds like you have a defective laptop, so I’d call right away if I were you.

I’m afraid if you’re looking for one on one consulting you’d have to pay me my hourly rate. ;-) I suggest finding a notebook forum and asking your questions there. I’m afraid I don’t have the spare time to offer free one on one consulting.

I have a question on two specific laptops, but I don’t have enough word count on these comments to explain what I need to. Is there any way for me to contact you about my question?

  • ThoughtsMedia July 25th, 2010 at 6:28 pm #19

I didn’t notice any problems with flex myself, though it’s not like I tried very hard to bend it. ;-)
    - Jason

  • game45165 July 25th, 2010 at 7:25 pm #20

How bad is the flex for these computers? I hear a lot of people are having problems with the keyboard. Just wondering.

  • fremy123 July 25th, 2010 at 7:30 pm #21

lol nvm I thought I had a question that was left but no xD…

    ok here’s a question…

when I first got my laptop and try it on which was just yesterday… it already crash one time and It lead me to this system repair… after that the boot time is a bit longer, it hangs randomly when Im doin something … happens a lot yesterday but now yet today…
should I return it to Dell and ask for a replacement???

  • ephr123 July 25th, 2010 at 8:29 pm #22

    @ThoughtsMedia

Thanks! Coz I bought/ordered an Inspiron which I just got yesterday and I was thinking of getting Studio 14z just like whats on the vid…

Youre right, the price went down to $799 And I just ordered yesterday the Studio 14z with accessories and options included and it only cost around $1200 which is pretty cheap actually

  • stuartfang July 25th, 2010 at 9:03 pm #23

    sorry jason

  • ThoughtsMedia July 25th, 2010 at 9:29 pm #24

And I’m telling you that this video is 7 months old, so bitching about the price is idiotic. Look, the 14z that Dell is selling now isn’t even anything like this one – the 14z from Dell Canada today starts at $699 and can’t be configured with a faster CPU…it’s a very different laptop. Why not look into this stuff you’re so keen to criticize instead of relying on information that’s 7 months old?

  • stuartfang July 25th, 2010 at 10:02 pm #25

you got the wrong idea jason, i am just saying for 1300 you can get something better, i didn’t say dell is bad, but the apple is truely a better designed pc none the less and im not trolling
